"," BBHD -Health Updates Health Updates from BBHD National Inhalants and Poisons Awareness Week, March 15 – 21 In 2005, 65 people died every day from unintentional poisoning – and the numbers of deaths has been increasing. Learn how to reduce your— or a loved ones— risk http://www.cdc.gov/Features/PoisonPrevention/ One on five students in America has used an inhalant to get high by the time he or she reaches the eighth grade. Inhalants are cheap, legal and accessible common house hold products and are as popular among middle school students as marijuana. Over 1000 common products can be used as inhalants, including gasoline, glue, paint, polishes, window cleaners, lighter fluid, typewriter correction fluid, felt tip markers and aerosols containing hair spray, deodorant, whipped cream, and air freshener. Inhalants are abused either by sniffing though the nose or inhaling fumes through the open mouth (huffing) much like a smoker inhales cigarette smoke. Usually the open tube of glue, nail polish, or marker is placed close to the nose and the fumes are inhaled. People who abuse inhalants may also spray the substance into a plastic or paper bag and huff that way (bagging) or even place the bag over their entire head. Often a product will be poured or sprayed on a piece of cloth, a rag, a towel, or a shirt sleeve or into a soda can and inhaled in that manner. Another method is to paint the fingernails with a product like correction fluid and inhale the substance on the nails. Sometimes an aerosol substance is sprayed directly into the mouth. Substances can also be placed into alternative containers (e.g., balloon filled with nitrous oxide) or heated first and then inhaled. The poisons in these products have deadly effects on the brain and body when they are inhaled or huffed”. Prevention through education has proven to work against this popular form of substance abuse. This is why the National Inhalant Prevention Coalition has developed National Inhalants & Poisons Awareness Week (NIPAW), an annual media-based, communi      ");
